While it’s true that most people might think of a Stratocaster when the Fender brand is mentioned, they have also created several other guitars that have stood the test of time. No model may be more representative of this than the Fender Telecaster.

Fender continues to pour time and effort into the Telecaster design, and the American Professional II model is a testament to all that this classic guitar has to offer. Just as with the Strat, the Tele has proven itself to be an incredibly versatile instrument, with guitarists from all genres making it their go-to guitar.

It only takes a single look to recognize that vintage Tele body shape. The American Professional II features either solid alder or roasted pine body (an unusual choice, but it works!) with your choice of 10 different colors and finishes, ranging from the traditional blonde to more contemporary colors such as ‘Dark Night’ and ‘Miami Blue.’ The neck is constructed out of maple regardless of what model you choose.

You have the option of a rosewood or maple fingerboard (each having 22 narrow-tall frets and rolled edges for additional smoothness) depending on the finish you select. As with most Fender guitars, the neck has that comfortable Deep ‘C’ profile that is a hallmark of the brand, and a new feature of the American Professional II is a sculpted neck/body heel (which adds to playing comfort and allows for easier access to those upper frets).

Electronics on American Professional II are certainly a step up from Telecaster models of years past. It’s loaded with twin V-Mod II single-coil pickups in both the neck and bridge positions, giving you that coveted vintage Tele tone with a little modern flair. You’ll find the traditional three-way pickup selector switch. Still, a nice touch is a new series wiring configuration (activated by a switch on the volume control), which gives an additional tonal option when both pickups are on.

Fender took a good look at some of the shortcomings of the traditional hardware as well. The bridge setup still has three adjustable ‘bullet-style’ saddles, but it features a top load design, making string changes easier while reducing the overall string tension.

Tuning machines feature a staggered configuration, which helps to get the nut’s right string break angle. One big plus is the hardshell case that comes with the price of admission – in our minds, way too many guitars these days do not come with one (or even a gig bag, for that matter), so having a difficult way to protect your investment is always a welcome addition.

Where the rubber meets the proverbial road is how the American Professional II performs. And trust us – it performs very, very well! You can feel the quality of the build right off the rack, and the playability with the factory setup is top-notch. Sure, you may decide to do some further setup to get it to your exacting tastes, but we have to say it’s pretty darn good right out of the box.

And that Tele tone. It’s about as iconic as the body design. Whether you are into country twang, smooth jazz, blues, or tend to like a little bit of good ‘ole rock and roll, the American Professional II certainly brings all it can to the party (and then some).
